What’s available in your local community?
Most communities have several great programs and services available to the local community, but how do you find out what these are?
There are many places you can go to find out what’s happening in the community, including:
One of the best ways to know what is available in your local area is to drop into your closest neighbourhood or community centre. Workers at these centres can listen to what you need and what you’d like to see in the community and can implement relevant programs. They can also refer you to a different service if they feel that a different service can better address your needs.
Your local library is a great way to become aware of what’s going on. Many libraries (depending on how big they are) will run activities, programs and workshops for the local community. These kinds of workshops might include study groups, homework help, storytime for kids, book clubs and many more. Aside from running their own programs, library staff are often aware of what is going on and what is offered in the community.
Another great way to hone in on what is offered in the local community is to check out the notice boards at your local shops, chemists and doctors’ office. Community and Neighbourhood Centres often hang posters about what they are offering and what events are coming up. They will have contact numbers and centre addresses on these posters so you are aware of how to get in contact with them.
The internet is another great way to find out what is available for you to access locally. You can also participate in online communities remotely from home.
